Eric Clapton – 10 March 2009 – Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne

Tonight Eric and the band played the last show of the Australian part of the tour.

We have no details about the setlist yet, but according this review “Clapton dips into his blues bag for thriller set” the following songs were played tonight: Tell The Truth, Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad, Little Wing, Nobody Knows You and of course Layla, Cocaine and Crossroads.

The Australian also has a review about the concert, but doesn’t mention Why Does Got To Be So Sad – God and his disciples faithful to blues-edged classics

Both newspapers report that Doyle Bramhall’s playing was excellent tonight:

Yet the constant, along with the star, was the sensational Bramhall, whose unusual, imaginative left-handed style of playing has been showcased for several years by Clapton, along with other guitar whizzes Derek Trucks and John Mayer, on his Crossroads Guitar Festival series of DVDs.

In his Derek days, Clapton duelled with the brilliant slide guitarist Duane Allman. There has been a succession of co-guitarists since, but on Sunday the youthful Doyle BramhallII came close to upstaging Clapton at times, and the master didn’t seem to mind.

He walked on stage playing an opening solo for Tell the Truth on his powder blue Stratocaster but was quickly trading solos with his left-handed lieutenant Doyle Bramhall, whose slide playing was a constant highlight.

Unfortunately this was the last show with Doyle Bramhall II. Doyle (with his band Arc Angels) will support Eric at the Royal Albert Hall concerts in May this year. Let’s hope he will be back in the band after the Royal Albert Hall concerts!
